Do It Yourself: 3 Kitchen Items You Can Easily Maintain at Home

Completing maintenance on kitchen equipment is essential to ensure you and the others in your home stay healthy and safe. Although you will be unable to clean and preserve all of your kitchen appliances, there will be particular items that you can check yourself.

How often certain objects need to be cleaned and checked will differ; however, it is best to complete these tasks regularly. This can ensure the kitchen equipment is free of dirt and germs, and it will also ensure they can function without any risk of injury or damage.

In this article, three of the most common items people can maintain at home by themselves will be listed. Care and maintenance instructions will also be provided for each of these items.

    Knives

The first item on this list is kitchen knives. Maintaining your kitchen knives is essential to ensure they remain sharp and functional. It might be a surprise to know that sharp knives are actually safer to use than dull ones; a knife that is kept sharp will require less pressure to cut and will move as directed. This will reduce the risk of you cutting yourself or something nearby.

To maintain your kitchen knives, you will require a high-quality knife sharpener. This item will be used to sharpen your knives, and most will come in various grits, which means the lower number will be the roughest setting and the higher number will be the smoothest. Due to the various settings, it is vital you learn how to use it correctly if you do buy a knife sharpener or whetstone to use.

    Pots and Pans

Despite their robust appearance and feel, pots and pans can be one of the delicate features in your kitchen. To ensure that they last, you must take care of them properly. With regular use, the items can become scratched and eventually become ruined. Not only with this make them look less presentable, damaged pots and pans can also cause food to stick, which will change the cooking results.

Thankfully, many brands will provide care instructions with the pots and pans. A lot of the time, this will include using soft sponges and wash clothes to clean your pots and pans to avoid metallic sponges scratching them. This can also apply when cooking; avoid using metal utensils to stir contents and opt for plastic alternatives. Another tip would be to dry pans and pots after cleaning them and ensure they are not stored wet.

    Wooden Chopping Boards

If you own a wooden chopping board, it will require upkeep and cleaning, especially as it is made of a porous material. This can become a breeding ground for bacteria and germs, with extra risk becoming apparent if it is used for preparing raw meats as well as other foods. Unfortunately, if the cutting board is not cleaned of bacteria, it can lead to foodborne diseases. Therefore, maintain and cleaning a wooden chopping board is critical.

Your wooden chopping board should be made of a hardwood, like cherry, maple or walnut, and treated with beeswax or food-safe mineral oil to prevent it from drying out. After using the chopping board, it should be cleaned thoroughly. You can do this using soap and warm water. Vinegar can be used to disinfect and baking soda can help remove stains. No matter what is used to clean the wooden chopping board, though, it should be dried properly before storing. Even those who are not skilled with DIY can maintain the three kitchen items listed in this article. Doing so will ensure their kitchen experience
